Estimates are educational. They do not diagnose any condition and do not establish eligibility for any medication. A licensed provider decides what is appropriate for you. Explore programs.
How it works
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². Pounds and inches are converted first, so the result is the same in either unit system. Adult categories follow the CDC and WHO: underweight below 18.5, healthy weight 18.5 to 24.9, overweight 25.0 to 29.9, and obesity 30.0 or higher (class 1 30 to 34.9, class 2 35 to 39.9, class 3 40 or higher).
Limitations
- BMI does not tell muscle from fat, or show where fat is stored.
- Risk at a given BMI varies with age, sex and ancestry.
- It is not for children, teens or pregnancy.
- BMI alone does not decide whether any treatment is appropriate. A licensed provider considers your full history.
What BMI is considered healthy for adults?
The CDC and WHO define 18.5 to 24.9 as the healthy weight range.
Does a BMI of 30 mean I qualify for a weight program?
No single number decides that. A licensed provider reviews your health history, other conditions and goals before deciding whether any treatment is appropriate.
